4 Summer Games to Enjoy Outdoors

With summer in full swing, now is the perfect time to make memories with friends and family. Here are four of our favorite outdoor games, to spark your creativity with items you already have at home. Don’t forget the sunscreen and snacks!

1. Bananagrams

The object of this game is to create words using different combinations of letters, similar to Scrabble. You can create the game yourself (for free!) and play it outside. Download the instructions for Bananagrams on the website. For an added challenge, set a 30-minute timer while you’re playing the game.

What you’ll need:

  • 144 Letter Tiles – These can be made out of construction paper or cardboard. You can make the tiles any size, from 1×1 inch to play at your dining table or 12×12 inches to play on your lawn. The quantity of each letter tile is listed in the chart below.
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • Construction paper or cardboard
  • Timer

To create this game, you can print the letter tiles or let your kids draw each letter on the tiles. This is a great way to encourage your kids to practice their alphabet and handwriting skills.

2. Bean Bag Bucket Toss

The object of this game is to land your bean bag in a designated bucket to receive points. You can create a set of house rules for the game, such as tossing underhand and distance regulations. The further away the bucket, the more points it’s worth.

What you’ll need:

  • Cornhole bean bags
  • A various assortment of buckets ranging from an empty trashcan to a large bowl
  • Paper and a marker to write the levels and point

3. Bowling

You don’t have to make a trip to the bowling alley to play this game. You can set up a bowling game with items you have around your house.

What you’ll need:

  • 10 empty plastic bottles to serve as the bowling pins
  • 1-2 balls – These could be a soccer ball, a dodgeball, rubber ball, or a ball of recycled newspaper held together with tape.

To set up the game, place 10 pins in the shape of triangle. Make sure the pins are a good distance apart.  Step back and let the good times roll!

4. Water Cup Races

No list of summer games is complete without a water game. This one is a simple take on the classic water gun races you see at a carnival.

What you’ll need:

  • Plastic cups
  • String
  • Tape
  • Squirt guns and water
  • Something to poke a hole in the cups (scissors or screwdriver)

The point of this game is to fill the cup with water (using a squirt gun) and push the cup down the string. You’ll have to create a “lane” for each player. Cut a hole in the cup and pull a long string through the hole. Attach each end of the string to a fence or tree. Make sure the inside of the cup faces the players. Create as many “lanes” as you need – one for each player. Then let the race begin! The first person to push the cup down the string wins. You can also create a relay race if you have several players.

We hope your summer is full of fun games and long-lasting memories! With a little creativity, you can make your own games and beat summer boredom.
